Kunlun Plaza is located in the centre of Kunming City, the capital of Yunnan province in the south of China.
The design was inspired by the local area and its fame for Bougainvillea plants which can be seen throughout the city and the southern province.
We went through various different concepts but the client eventually decided to come back to my original design idea.
The visual branches all stem from the main columns of the architecture, where one branch combines with another there point of contact becomes a feature point, be it seating, or a sculpture, or a tree.
We used repetition a lot in the style of many modern boutiques, and we used these same repeating features to connect the upper level to the lower level bringing the overall design together.
It is currently under construction.
